Helping hands could make it a large and positive and the story just reflects the sentiments. After going through the article, i have gained a lot of positive hope and expectations to survive the lost business. Thanks for sharing with us for our morale boosting.

Along that same line is forgetting the client's front and back office staff. As sales folks we contact a lot of the front office [buyer, officers, etc] but the grease and glue that make things flow are often implemented by others. For example, try having your Customer Service staff call the customer's Customer Service...WOW this never happens. Or better yet your A/P clerk call the customers [somebody who will actually see you get paid] to share war stores with. When the going gets rough there is nothing like someone on the inside of your customers organization who your staff has a personal relationship with. Anybody tried this?

I am opening a new retail business this spring, and have been working with SCORE counselors for several months now. Their guidance has been extremely helpful. It is through one of my counselors that I learned of Frank's book, the ABC's of Site Selection. I found the defined terms and the weighted checklists to be particularly useful to me when choosing a location for my new boutique. I would recommend his book to others who are in the process of finding the right location for their business.

Every day I drive past a little pizza place that just closed down at the end of my road. It makes me sad to see that it recently went out of business. They were only there for about a year and a half and just couldn't seem to make it work. I breaks my heart to think of those types of stories happening, but seeing this story is a light to my eyes. I think it is a great to see people helping others to make a positive impact and difference! It is truly exciting!

Thanks for sharing!

Truer words were never spoken. In our business we always try to add products with the highest possible ASP (Average Sell Price) because for the most part, the same costs/labor/time is needed to process a small order or a large order! Of course, lower ASP products with very high margins can generate profit. We do have a couple of products below $30.00 with 80% margins and these can put net profit on the bottom line.

Unless you are very highly automated so that processing a small order or orders can be profitable, keep the margins and the ASP as high as you can.

Very interesting insight. I too thought that franchises were simply a less risky way to start your own business.

Ive heard that Borrego Springs Bank, out of CA are still doing these aggresivily nationwide.

Certainly seems counter-intuitive. Until I read this I felt that franchises were less risky. One tends to think of the franchisor as being clever, knowledgeable and a useful resource. Apparently this is not the case.

Very true indeed. To be successful, you need to find a smallish niche where there are few competitors and unfortunately only a few customers. We've been fortunate that our site like www.homephototherapy.com or www.woodslight.com don't attract much competition allowing us to be found in online searches on Google, Yahoo and others.

If you want to sell Chocolate, Coffee or T-Shirts then you'll need an edge over the hundreds, perhaps thousands of other sellers on the net.
